Don’t Mess With Me
On Wednesday, September 30, over 25 men and women made their way to Georgia Southern University’s recreation Activity Center in hopes of finding a way to protect themselves.
That Wednesday, the Xi Tau Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha along with the Xi Eta Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta hosted a self-defense class. Georgia Southern’s own Tae-Kwon Do instructors provided the men and women with tips on how to protect themselves in physically threatening situations.
Interestingly enough, the event came right after Georgia Southern University was named one of the nation’s safest college campuses by The Daily Beast. With several break-ins and robberies in the Statesboro area, it is important for students to know how to be safe. The Dean of Students Office continues to keep students up-to-date on things happening on campus.
Xi Tau presents Women’s Appreciation Week
September 28 through October 3, the Xi Tau Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated will host Women’s Appreciation Week. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the week is being presented in support.
This is the first time the chapter has ever had a women’s appreciation week and are excited about its manifestation. The week will highlight issues affecting women today and includes programming about these issues. By partnering up with various organizations and departments all over campus, the chapter hopes to reach a vast amount of the Georgia Southern community.
Although women are the focus for the week, men are encouraged to participate in the week’s events as well. The chapter looks forward to seeing you there.
The Coldest Winter EVER
Often referred to as “ice cold,” this fall, the hearts of the brothers of the Xi Tau Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha are far from that.
Alpha Cold Winter Coat Drive, a new service initiative, kicked off this week. With the approach of the winter season, the brothers felt it necessary to collect winter clothing for those unable to afford it.
The chapter has solicited the help of the Georgia Southern campus and community to collect winter clothing items, such as coats, sweaters, pants, hats, etc. The items collected will be given to a local charity.
TOGA! TOGA!
Continuing to set the tone, as they always do, the brothers of the Xi Tau Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated will be hosting the first theme party of the semester.
On Saturday, September 19, true “Greekdom” will flood Statesboro Georgia. The TOGA PARTY will be held at the Robbin’s Nest of Statesboro, one of the most popular upscale venues in the area.
A popular college tradition, toga parties have been around for years. The brothers of Xi Tau have decided to capitalize on that tradition and bring it to Georgia Southern.
All this week, September 14 through 18 from 12p.m. to 3p.m., the brothers will be offering free tutorials on toga creation. One could even bring their toga to their information table and have a brother create it. Although, not required, togas are highly suggested. Besides, what’s a toga party without togas?
Doors to the event will open at 10p.m. and advance tickets are $5. Those planning to attend can see any brother to purchase a ticket or drop by their table in Russell Union.

Pillow talk? What’s that?
“Pillow talk ” is a newfound name for gossip spread between two people in a relationship. Often times, we share information with our significant other, even after we were vowed to secrecy by whomever we got the information from.
The brothers of Xi Tau have chosen to entitle their empowerment series, “Pillow Talk.” The first edition of Pillow Talk will take place on Wednesday, September 9, 2009.
The subtitle for the first edition is “D.O.A.: Death of Ayeshawty.”
Where someone is from has a big impact on how that same person may dress, the music they listen to and even the terms of endearment they use. “Shawty,” a term used widely in the hip hop culture, is now a commonly used greeting for a potential “date.”
More and more, young women have become resistent to the word and feel somewhat disrespected when someone uses it to get their attention.
Realizing this, Xi Tau has decided to focus this edition on effective communication in relationships and will include several different opportunities for attendees to participate in group discussions and role play. Those attending the program will also be able to speak with a professional psychologist about how communication can make or break a relationship.
First things first.
Hello World!
For the duration of this semester (fall 2009), I will be assisting the Xi Tau chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated in keeping up with events that could affect their fraternity. The members of Xi Tau are very near and dear to my heart. They are all very involved at Georgia Southern University and are true role models for all men that walk the university’s beautiful campus. I’m very excited about working with them and can’t wait to expose the world to the Xi Tau chpater of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated.
